Default Front drive shaft removal questions?

2004 Dodge Ram 1500 slt 4x4. I was under the truck today and noticed a torn boot on front drive shaft. The driveshaft seems to come in 2 pieces. There's a boot at the transfer case end with 2 clamps. This ones fine. Then there's another one about halfway up where another shaft begins. (not sure how to describe). 2 dumb questions since the Chilton manual gives no info. Can I remove the whole setup and drive it without hurting anything while I fix this? (assuming of course I don't use 4x4). 2nd question chilton manual doesn't describe this at all and I want to do it right. Any online helpful tutorials? I been googling no luck.

Welcome to my world bud I just got out to my grandpas garage about two hours ago all happy to get the nobby tires rotated and so some underbody painting, and bam I took off the front left tire and the boot is busted. This has been my second boot I am going to replace. I was just getting ready to post a thread asking for some help. You will need a 36 mm socket.

pull the wheel, then the brakes. pull the upper control arm off and the steering tie rod as well. Then you should be able to get to the boot.

If my memory is right the front of the drive shaft goes up kinda above the front diff then slid forward and out of the transfer case then moved rearward to remove.

dogman is right. after you unbolt the front end of the shaft, raise it up then forward beside the exhaust manifold. That should give you enough room to drop the other end down then pull it out.
