Inherited 2004 Ram 1500
Hope someone can help. I got a 2004 Ram from my girlfriends father.
This truck only has 15,080 miles on it and has been sitting for 3 years or so under a cover (tin roof, open on three sides) in east Texas.
Truck wont start on its own, starts right up when I spray starter fluid into the throttle body, then dies after about 2 seconds.
I drained all the gas by snaking a vaccum line hose into the tank past the check valve, then refilled with 2 gallons of clean fuel.
The truck still wont start. I do not hear the fuel pump running when I turn it on and listen up close, so I tried tapping the top of the pump to see if it would free up.
Nothing.
I am thinking I need to drop the tank, and replace the fuel pump, but then I started thinking is there something easier I am missing?
I read Weedahoes posts on his tank swap, I can do it if I really have to.
There appear to be some very strange connectors on top of the tank, any tips on getting these little buggers off?

Thanks guys!

Just because you hear the pump engage doesn't mean its good. Get a fuel pressure tester, Hook it up, Key on (Not start) and look at what the pressure is. If its below 57psi or above 62psi you have to pull the pump, Otherwise I wouldn't bother with the pump. Next thing I would look at is clogged injectors.

that metal ring holding the fuel pump on the tank you just have to take a chisel and tap counter clockwise until it pops free, if thats what your confused about.
will it crank over just not fire up?
if it wont crank then your looking at possibly battery problem or if it cranks then check fuel pressure

The truck actually starts up and runs when I spray starting fluid into the throttle body, and I am wondering how to get the quick connect off the fuel pump while the tank is still mounted to the truck, i can just barely reach it. Is it a push in and pull out type?
This is a pic courtsey of Weedahoe, mine is the smaller tank,
I am assuming the one with the metal ring in the middle houses the fuel pump assembly. Is that correct? What is the other one to the left? How do you get the fuel supply line connector off of the pump? The service manual is a little unclear on this.

You are probably just trying to get it started with all the old gas still in the line from the tank forward. Unhook a fuel hose in the engine compartment and turn the key a couple times. Make sure to have a rag or container to catch it in or have it pointed in a safe direction. When it sprays good, clear fuel, hook it back up. If it starts with ether, I bet you are just still cleaning the pipes out. Try it and a good battery and I bet it will fire right up. Good luck!

When I took down my old tank I couldnt disconnect the fuel lines without letting it down first. There wasnt enough room for me to do it. But there are clips that hold the union on the fuel line. That simply slide back on when you are putting it back together and should snap in place.

Ok, I got the Tank Out and the Fuel Pump out of the tank, now: Should I pay 320 bucks for a OEM pump from Dodge or $220 from AutoZone and hope it works?
Are Autozone pumps rebuilt?? Anybody??

I would ask autozone if they are refurbs., I doubt it though. Have you tried checking online for better prices on the pump or is it the kind of thing you need done now? This site shows it for $135 before shipping http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...&siteid=213674. You could also try henson motorsports, I've heard from other guys they can get you good prices on mopar parts.
