2003 1500 hemi...a little oil loss
we bought this truck used a few years back and for some time now i'm noticing it burns about 1 qrt. ....maybe every month , i was told that a dodge repair station said thats pretty nomal for a 5.7.....any truth to that.
BS, oil burning is not normal. You need a different mechanic to sort it out.
I think the emphasis should be placed at "not normal".......but in Dodge world "acceptable".
I've read a lot of posts over the years stating how Dodge/dealerships say, so much oil burning is "acceptable" in these Hemi's. I've forgotten the actual figure, but someone will chime in.
All I know is, I'd still be concerned if mine was using any oil like that.
Valve stem seals or just plain worn engine??????
Al.

Hello Al,
Yeah, the dealer will tell a owner it is acceptable if the truck is still under warranty, but I bet if a customer comes off the street and asks about burning a quart a month they would tell them it is excessive. Since going to my local dealer with my PCM issues I have lowered my opinion of them.

Same here. I have two 5.7's and have never added oil between changes.

1qt of oil on a heavily used truck per oil change would be what i consider normal. The 5.9's were known to burn excessive oil, but the Hemi's shouldn't burn more than 1/2qt of oil every oil change. The tolerances within the engine are very tight. Much tighter than most.
Newer trucks burn more than used trucks due to the break-in procedure. My turck has 9kmi and i haven't experienced any oil consumption yet.
On a cold start, do you have blue smoke out your tailpipe? If not, first thing I would reccomend is changing your PCV valve. a clogged one will make an engine buen an unacceptable amount of oil.
if so, your valve stem seals are probably worn and need replacing.
If it's not your PCV valve, then i'd say your rings are worn down and you have a bit of blow-by. This can be checked by a compression check.

That's not acceptable, My 83 r/c with 303,000 only uses 3/4 qt in 3,000 miles, and it sits for 2-3 weeks without being driven. Even my 72 jeep with the AMC 360 only uses 2 qts between changes. Get it checked somewhere else.
