Default Transmission problem...

hello all. i have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 lt 4x4 4.7l v8. i have never had any problems with my tranny untill just the other day i went to drive it and it was in drive it shifted from 1st to 2nd and then once it gets to the top of 2nd gear it just kicks out and acts like its in N. untill you come to a stop it goes back to 2nd and stays there untill you take it out and put it back in drive. however if you manually shift it into 1st or 2nd gears it runs fine and there isnt any out of the ordinary noises comming from the trans. it shift into P R N D 1 2 gears fine. any ideas? what is the problem here?

The starting point with the transmission always seems to be, check the fluid level, when was it last serviced? Drop the pan and inspect and service the trans. Anyway that pretty much how it goes. Download the service manual and start reading. Good luck.

definitely check the fluid level, always seems to be the culprit. Also, try driving in "tow/haul" mode and see if problem continues. Sounds like there might be an issue with your overdrive.

the transmission fluid was just changed 1,100 miles ago. the fluid level is fine. and driving with tow/haul on or off doesnt make any diff.

How soon after the trans service did the problem start? There has been problems with properly seating the filters that can cause all kinds of things including poor idle.

Absolutely check for codes. These transmissions are fully electronic and often times the fix is simple. Be it a new sensor or solenoid pack etc....

The dodge RE transmissions get a bad rep a lot of times because of the simple failure of a electronic component in the valve body which often gives the perception of slipping or causes soft/hard shifting. The 545RFE is a stout unit for a half-ton and history has shown 90% of the issues to be electronic and when caught in time cause no long term damage.

Just throwin it out there folks...

Since you just had a fluid change, it might be the filters as Red says. The flat pan filter plugs directly into the tranny pump and it is easy to get this filter cocked during install. This will cause the tranny pump to suck air and give all kinds of problems. Getting any 0700 codes?
