transmission solenoid
My 2006 Dodge Ram 1500/5.7 Hemi (116,000kms) is experiencing problems shifting into proper gear when put into (D)drive. Had it hooked up to a generic scanner (non-dodge scanner)only because the nearest dealer is 1200kms away and the scanner read:CODE P0750B-SHIFT SOLENOID "A" MALFUNCTION.Is this a big job to replace? Does the valve body have to be removed or just a cover to remove.Don't want to be screwed over by a local garage.Need help big time. What should I do? Thanks a million in advance.
man, straight up and honest- it will take you longer to drive the thing to a garage than it will to do it yourself..
I recommend getting yourself a Haynes manual, or root around in the faq section on this or the second gen board (they are are pretty dang close as far as this repair goes)..
you might as well get some new fluid, new gasket and new filter.. as well as get both the speed sensor and the governor solenoid.. they sit right next to each other.. total investment of around $200... it will only take a person with moderate skill an hour max to replace them.
in the mean time, use your shifter to manually select gears as if you were driving a manual to save your clutches.. No harm, no foul to your tranny if you do that... DON'T let it try to start out in second or third like it is likely trying to now.. that will wreck your tranny quick like.

I knew it was based on your description.. I meant it like this: from a standstill, move your column shifter to 1st. Build speed, use it again to 2nd. Build more, then move it to drive. Use your column shifter like a manual shifter until you can get the repair work done.
Starting off in second will work, but it stresses the clutches in your auto tranny, and it gets hot like that which causes serious damage. The tranny, with that issue is likely attempting to start off in second (or God help you third) right? Don't let it. Manually drop your column shifter to first before starting off after each stop. THIS, won't hurt the tranny. Starting off in 2/3 WILL. Does that make better sense?

yes, this is what I was told from the local garage, that its starting in second, not drive,he didn't mention third. Thanks for the info. on starting off in first gear then working up to drive. Are you saying that the speed sensor and governor solenoid will take care of this problem, when the scanner shows the above code:P0750B-SHIFT SOLENOID "A" MALFUNCTION?
Yup- that's what I'm saying. I'm not sure about the 'B' designation on the code, but the two mentioned parts are going to fix your issue. Well, one is anyway- the second you may as well do since your in there already.
