I have an 02 ram with the 5.9 196000 on it and the 46re trans. yesterday i pull into a parking stop and go to take off it wont move. i shut it off and restart it and it moves for a min then quits again, so i parked it for the night and go to start it the next day and it wont start. it has fuel to the fuel rail and its getting spark. so im kinda stumped on it. the trans has been giving problems like not down shifting into first when i stop oh and the parking pawl is broke.

 

Welcome to the site. Sorry to day I know very little about the 5.9 but hopefully someone else will come along and share come info. My thoughts would be cam posi sensor but IDK how the 5.9 works close to the 5.7

With that many miles though it could have jumped timing.

 

i got the same truck and tranny, recently i was dealing with some tranny issues too but got them fixed
first of all we need more details.

• what where the symptoms before this (if it had any)
• theres got to be at least some engine codes? (check engine light?)
• have you checked donw there for anything unusual?

could be sensors? (i have some really good links with pics of how to change them)

 

well I got it started! thank god didnt want to pay to have it towed. I put a little gas in the intake started right up no problems and idled then i drove it a few hundred feet and it stayed in gear. it threw a p300 and p 1682 before the trans quit but it was running fine . The trans started by not down shifting in to first when i stop. I can put it in first and it takes off fine. then it started not shirfting out of second gear till about 4500rpm. i havent felt any slipping or hard shiftinig. but im heading to pick it up in a few and ill let you know how it does on the 7 miles journey home. also i have a 98 durango thats has a trans problem too. just rebuilt and it wont shift out of second till it red lines and i let off the gas when its warm. shiftd high when cold but on its own! if anyone has any ideas. thanks again for any help you can give!

sounds to me that you got an electrical problem SAME AS THE ONE I HAD except p0300.

My theory is... There isnt enough current or some short is preventing the tranny's electrical solenoids to work right and as well as with your spark plugs causing them to miss fires.
