Tie rod and check engine light questions

First off, while doing my level the driver side tie rod popped out of its socket. I put it back in by gently tapping it with a hammer. After it was in, I tried to pop it back out but it seems to be on there firmly. While driving it there was no shaking and my alignment seems good. I'm leaving for a 100 mile trip tomorrow, do you think it will be ok?
Also, I'm sure it's been covered, but my check engine light came on tonight. Is there anyway to pull the code w/o a scanner? It came on about a week ago and the code being thrown was the fuel cap wasn't closed even though it was. The autoshop said that theres a possibility the sensor is going bad. Since everything is closed tomorrow I'm pretty SOL unless theres a way I can pull the codes myself w/o a scanner.
Thanks guys!
