Is the third brake light operable? Lot of guys forget to check that one. Also, a bad connection at any of the bulb sockets can cause the lamp out light to illuminate even if it is actually working or the running lights may work, but when the brakes are pressed, that filament could be burned out. Check the license plate bulbs too, I cant remember if they are on that circuit or not??

I had a socket that was burnt and would intermitently break connection and ding. Finally saw it was the driver rear light and found the problem . Cleaned the socket replaced the bulb with a little dielectric grease and all is well. Good luck...

early trucks have issues with the rear tail light sockets either melting or corroding. I had a bud who had the same issue and all his lights were working and I kept telling him one of them wasnt working correctly. He called me the other day to tell me all lights were working EXCEPT one of the filaments for the brake light. Parking lights and all worked fine but one brake light was out and he never know it because he checked them by himself and couldnt press the brake and look at the same time (although there are ways to do it alone)

@Dirty, the license plate lights are on that detection circuit.

The truck clanged that annoying bell until I found and replaced the lamp on the license plate. That is, after I walked around the truck however many times swearing at the Ram that all the lights worked fine.

@OICUDRIVE12
Separately, I had the right side brake light problem where the circuit boad or connector is damaged or burned and the light intermittently goes out setting off the alarm for a light out. There is a thread somewhere on DF about fixing the circuit board for the lights. I followed it and all is well now. Drove me nuts since it seemed to be fine yet the alarm would sound off, then go away, then sound off, then go away.

My vote for #1 most irritating issue I have dealt with in this truck is the alarm for a light out. I would rather that it goes off once then SHUT-UP, already. Maybe the circuit should be checked just at start-up and then (and only then) sound an alarm if the condition is detected. ...dream-on

Yep... big, strip-mall, store-front windows work great for checking brake lights by your lonesome.
