go new, very easy to replace as well, fan shroud, fan, belt.. the overflow bottle comes out with the shroud i believe, remove old pump clean with a razor blade or scraper little brake clean and reinstall.

to get the fan off you'll need something to go through the holes on the water pump cover to hold it while you twist the big nut on the clutch fan. I just used a piece of steel with two holes and bolted it on

For an 04 5.7, www.AutoZone.com has a brand new Duralast water pump (P/N FWP-9303) for $89 with a LTT warranty. Or you can get the remanned ValueCraft (P/N L58-623) for $56 plus $21 (core) but only has a 1 year warranty.

So $89 minus $56 is $33 for that lifetime warranty.

New!!! Especially if its from Autozone. My Father is a part-time manager there, on ALL Reman parts - Autozone corp. plans for a 50-60% return on the part due to mis-repair/rebuild.... Amazing, I know - but true.
Im sure you dont want to pull the old one out, install the reman one....an a week later pull it out and do it again - especially in the cold!

Last time i changed a water pump was in the winter and cold outside. Me and a buddy did it. We had halogen heat lamps on behind us and I would work for a while and turn around and warm up while he took over. We did this back and forth until we got it done.

Ah.....good memories.
