Default My vent selector is broken. What's it take to fix it?

I have a 2003 3500 SRW with the 305 hp cummins in case the engine or model matters. When I turn the ventilation selector switch, it doesn't do anything now. The fan still works properly, I just can't control where to send the air. I figure I am experiencing the same problem I had when the truck was a few years old and it was repaired under warranty. What really concerns me is I think it cost Dodge in the $400's to fix it and they told me the repair involved taking the whole dash out to get to the broken diverter or whatever it was. I have since been turning the fan speed down before changing positions as I heard this was a common problem but mine probably has broken again anyway. Do y'all figure this is probably the same problem again and if so, is there an easier fix? I do not plan to tackle this one myself, but would like to know what it cost some of you to get it fixed by someone other than the stealership, as I might just have to put up with the problem for that price.

Thanks, guys. I will take a look at it this weekend when I get time. I'll bet I don't have the patience either, but at least I can get my shadetree guy that does stuff I need to look and estimate for me.

There is a video that shows the guy cheating and tearing the hvac box apart and hacking it back together with glue to change the blend doors faster. Take the dash out. Its not bad and can be done in about an hour.

Thanks for the warning. My dash has actually cracked from the windshield to the front where it becomes vertical. Does this mean when it is taken out it will come apart and not go back in properly or have big bad gaps? I was already planning on buying one of those custom dash covers for it.

Mine was cracked and brittle. Well of course when i took the dash out the piece with the defrost vent shattered trying to pop it out and the main piece broke trying to take out the damn defrost tubing vents. Best bet is try to get dodge to replace the dash then fixing your vent problem. There are a few guys that complained and dodge replaced the dash for a hundred dollars.

So, just bitch and maon to Dodge even thought I'm over 2 years out of warranty? Granted, the dash shouldn't be split, but I can't see them doing it. I guess it doesn't hurt to try though. Any idea of where and how much I can get the replacement dash from if it comes apart? Seeing the risk of it doing so, I may just have to suffer through the way it is now.

Well the defrost piece is about 200 dollars. The main piece up top is about 800. I got a junkyard dash for 250 and took what I needed, but my dash is blue and impossible to find. So it's a little weird, but it wasnt worth the price. I'm pissed because people are getting theirs replaced for a 100 bucks and i doubt i can do anything now.

That is ridiculous! I will certainly bark at the dealer and see what I can come up with. THanks.
