Default Alternator Problems?

I have an 04 ram 1500 and recently when I accelerate a winding noise grows louder and louder. Also when I accelerate, my lights become brighter. When at idle, the battery gauge seems to move back and forth. Is this a problem with the alternator? I have also heard that it could be a problem with the regulator on my alternator. Any ideas on where I should start or what it could be? Thanks.

First thing to do it take it by a auto parts shop and let them test it. The regulator for the alt is inside the PCM so if it is your regulator, you got other issues. I would check all the ground and power cables though and make sure everything is dry.

^^ i agree with weed. have the alt tested at the auto parts store. might as well have them test the battery while your there to make sure that you haven't dropped a cell and trying to operate on ~10.8-11 V.
