Default 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4

I engaged my truck into 4X4 yesterday and it was driving fine but about a mile from the house it started "popping" out of 4X4 and into neutral. I shifted to neutral and back to 4H...it went a little further then did the same thing. Is it a vacuum hose issue? What causes it to come out of 4X4?

Thanks

sounds like the electric actuator is giving you some grief or its out of sync and not staying in. grab a look at the service manual in the FAC section and take a look at the actuator. You may just have to check the connections maybe clean them up.

2002 1500 doesn't have any vacuum involved in the 4x4 system. Also, do you have the electrical or mechanical 4x4 control? Could get it either way in 2002. How many miles on the truck? Auto or manual transmission?

That's news to me. I always thought they had the NV 241/243 opt. in them which are vacuum actuator driven. I haven't looked it up to verify, but if you know something I don't I'd sure like a link to the info...

Well, Hammer, now you're making me question myself. :-) My 2002 had the manual shifted transfer case (preferred, IMHO) so I know there was no vacuum involved in that one. I read all about both cases in the manual when I had it, and I'm about 90% sure the non-manual case had electric motor actuators. It for-sure had an electric switch. I think I still have the manual on CD at home so I'll verify.

Sorry for the late reply...It is a mechanical (shifter on the floor). The truck has 152,000 miles and has automatic.

Thanks

That many miles on the truck the transfer case may have a wear problem. Manual transmissions (and transfer cases) usually start popping out of gear when they get worn-out. Have you kept up with the maintenance fluid changes? Checked that you have enough in the case? You might try changing it now if it's been a long time, but unfortunately the prognosis is probably not good.
