hey hey, so I am buying an AT3030 muffler for my 06 Hemi and ive heard that a new Y pipe helps flow and obviously performance. what i am wondering is exactly what the Y pipe is, is it right after the headers? do they really help with flow and performance? any help at all would be great
the y-pipe is where the down pipes from each bank of the motor (after the cats) meet and merge into the single 3" main pipe that goes to the muffler. The factory design has the two down pipes crimped together and shoved into the 3" main pipe & welded shut. This is a pretty substantial choke-hold on exhaust flow. Some people choose to buy a pre-made y-pipe, but an good exhaust shop can fab one up as well. You might have to try several shops in order to find one that will do all the custom bending and fabrication to line it up right, but it can be done!
IMO it is cheaper to just buy one. My X pipe was $30 shipped on Ebay. As for more performance, there is a lot of science involved in exhaust systems, intake air flow, valve/head flow, diameter of pipes, bends, temperature, velocity, restrictions from bends, kinks, cats, mufflers, ECT.
i had a custom Y pipe made and installed along with my AT3030. here are some pics. and the y pipe fab/install was about $55, and muffler install about $40.
thanks allot John those pictures really helped out more than you can believe, how do you like the sound/performance with the Y and AT3030? im ordering the 3030 tomorrow
