Default experience with MC 5w20 with 4.7l

HI,

my first post... I just acquired 2002 1500 quad cab 4x2 with 4.7l engine. Truck has 77k miles. I've been reading this forum before making a purchase and notice decent amount of threads about sludge issues with 4.7l engines. Trying to be proactive, so I will be changing PCV and oil+ filter soon.

Wanted to know specifically if anyone had first hand experience with Motorcraft 5w20 oil with early 4.7L RAM engines? My manual calls for 5w30, but I am thinking 5w20 might help ever so slightly with MPG and sludge.

Thanks for your input,
Zee

First off, welcome to DF!

5w-20 might help with the mileage about .00003%. Otherwise, stick with what Dodge says to use.

A high-detergent oil, changed a couple of times, might relieve any sludge existing now. A dose of Sea Foam every now and then may also help. Sludge seems to be the result of too-short trips and infrequent oil changes.

PCV valves are cheap and easy to change on the 4.7. What does the oil filler cap look like? Any orange/red or yellowish color?
