That is the bearing, the bearing rollers roll on that and a inner race. The weird thing is the inner race didnt have gouges like the outer did. If it is just the bearing then nothing else is wrong. All you need is to replace the bearings and it is more of a labor issue. Now if the bearing lets loose and grenades and spins inside of the housing then you'll be looking at a whole rear end. My axle guy says they best way to prevent this is rebuild the axle the right way, set the bearing pre load perfect, back lash and everything. He thinks dodge messed up on their bearing pre load and made it a hair too tight. Now if your in the axle, I would replace the LSD with a tru trac also. Kill too birds with one stone.

see, and this is what I thought it was...So I go up to that shop and tell the guy. He's like ok let's take a look and a listen, so we do and while it's up on the lift he starts telling me that I'm going to have to have the entire rear end rebuilt, new gears and all...Is it possible that it already spun loose and I didn't notice, or would the diff have locked up and I wouldnt be able to drive it?

Like I said, we had the diff semi-apart putting in that new axle, and everything looked fine...We spun the gears so that we could look for any signs of them being bad, but they all looked fine.

No if the bearing spun then the whoe rear end would lock up and would sheer teeth off the gears and you would be on the side of the road. Im 100% sure your gears are still fine

Yeah, that's what I thought. The dude was trying to tell me it's gonna be like 1500 cuz im gonna have to get new gears new bearings, everything.

Two buddies of mine directed me to a shop that they have used before. Sal actually got his mustang geared there and they did a good job he said, so I am going to use them.

Told me it'd be 300 + parts, and he is gonna do all the bearings and stuff while they are in there you know?

well mine was $1200 for a master install kit, detroit tru trac and labor. I hate how the rear end is so precise with measurement or I would have done it myself. I hate paying for other people's work who have the ability to charge whatever they like.

Yeah, I totally know what you mean.

I would do it myself with my friends dad, but he said it's a pretty long job to do...and given that, every time I work on some thing on my truck it takes like twice as long as it needs to...I figured for a few hundred bucks I would rather just take it to a trusted shop and not even mess with it.

That tru trac is like 400 by itself...Did you regear too or something?

Cuz he told me it would be 300 labor, then whatever the parts cost...My buddy over at Oreilly told me he can get the gear install kit with all the bearings, races, etc for like 100 bucks...so hopefully im not looking at more than 400 for this
