Default Key w/ OEM Starter...

Hey there.. I'm looking at ordering a key for my truck as we've lost one of them somewhere. I found a key with the remote locks online for $116 + cutting (locally)... is that a good price?

I'm also looking at one key with a remote start button on it. Any chance my '06 Laramie would respond to that button? I doubt it, I don't get that lucky.

The issue at hand is this.. Getting a Key on-line is cheaper but when you take it to get it cut. Should they make a mistake or the key don't work you are out of luck as they don't guarantee it . Plus once that key is cut you still must take it to the stealership and have them program it? And they charge at least $50 bucks to do that. Getting the key from the dealership for $219 you get 2 things Guarantee it works and programed.

Also unless your truck was set up with remote start nothing will happen when you push that button and might be a waste of time.. Get a build sheet and see what your truck has in it.

You need the starter module before a button can work.
Good info above.
I would highly reccomend doingTWO keys. This way you can have the dealer program one you buy from them and you can program the other you buy online so it only costs you a small amount now rather than a larger amount if it were to happen again.
I bought a basic chipped key(no lock/unlock) on the top part as I wanted less bulky. Those run $20 shipped online and once the dealer programs the one you buy from them, you can program the cheapo key yourself as a spare. I programmed a key before I lost one of the originals.

You need 2 factory programmed keys in order to do any additional key programming yourself. The dealer will reprogram both keys as original if you purchase one from them and only have 1 original.

I have an 2004 ram. Just had a local ACE hardware make a copy of the key for $69 and it works perfectly, no programming needed from dealer. You have to make sure they can make smart keys. Good luck.
