Default whats a good cold air intake

im a newbie with performance parts. i bought a intake from ebay. it didnt come with the box to keep the heat away. i notice in sum pictures of other rams that they removed the other box. the one that says hemi 5.7. i didnt and didnt move around any wires, hoses and stuff. im planning to buy a better intake. is it better to buy one that removes both boxes or it dont really matter? wats a good intake? i seen sum volant ones online. i think i seen one that lets u keep that hemi 5.7 box and one that doesnt. i saved the pictures of valont if u guys wanna see it.

I made my own PVC and cut the joints and plastic welded everything all together with a S&B filter on the end. I also have the airram air scoop by the pass side headlight to direct fresh air to it.

If your "CAI" does not require you to remove the restrictive "Hemi Hat", then it's really not doing anything for you.

Other than some really top end CAIs like the Vararam which gets the air from down low and outside of the truck (which could be bad for off-roaders, or even crossing road water after a rain), there is no real significant performance (air flow) difference between spending upwards of $300 on one, getting one on ebay or making one yourself. I have seen (and repaired) some pretty poor quality ebay ones that have fallen apart on guys just from road vibrations.

I was considering one of those from airram. How effective do you think they are?

He said some factual info some time back on DT I think and gave some numbers. Nothing huge but every bit helps.

Cool thanks I'll look that up. Might grab one in a couple of weeks or so.

Although he sells a few CAIs the Spectre one from Air Ram has a flaw in that the mounting bolt that connects to the side wall of the engine bay and supports the filter element snaps easily from road vibrations.

I've fixed a couple of those now for friends, one was a moderator here for a while. I ended up making him a whole new one as the repair of the bolt just put the stress on the CAI where the bolt attached to a small bracket on that end. The bracket's weld failed, leaving a small hole in the side of the CAI tube. So basically I re-made the whole thing out of PVC, and only re-used the filter and heat shield that came with it.

This is the ebay one I referred to in my earlier post with the same issue. If you'll look above the filter, it's that "L" bracket that either the bolt will strip out on the truck wall side or the bracket and/or weld will fail on the CAI side.

Yep, that CAI is a piece of ****. Build one out of PVC and buy a K&N filter from autozone, even with paint, you're looking at $50 for something as good as a $300 kit.

I really like my vararam and the performance increase it provides. But, like hammer said, I would not recommend it if you do much offroading or if you are in an area that floods much.
