Default RPM surges?

I have a 2006 2500 4x4 with a 5.9. when it goes into high idle the engine surges continually. It doesn't show on the tach but you can definately hear and feel it as it causes the truck to rock gently. It also does it at highway speeds, mostly noticable at 55mph. I have been getting at fault for the Crankshaft Postioning Sensor, PO0336. It says "performance" Would that cause it? I have a new sensor ordered but I doubt that's the problem.
