Default airbag light

I have a 2002 1500 4x4 5.9. My airbag light randomly turns on and off. Some days it wont come on at all and others it turns on and off many times during the drive. It never stays on for more than maybe 5 or 10 mins. Any ideas what it could be? The dealership said it could be a 1000 different things and not to worry about it for now. Could it be a clock spring? i've heard that that is a common problem causing the light.

thanks for the help

That is something to worry about. I would go to the dealer and have them scan the truck with the light is on and see what the problem is.

All Chryslers are notorious for the clock spring going. 98.74% chance that's exactly what it is, especially when it's intermittent.
The system is fail-safe, so you don't have to worry about the bag going off and smacking you in the face while driving, BUT that also means it WON'T DEPLOY in an accident. It will also cause a FAIL in an inspection state.

Mine went out last fall in my '02 Grand Cherokee.

Clock spring replacement is relatively easy. The part is $100'ish and takes about an hour. You will need a steering wheel puller, but most auto parts stores will rent you one cheap or loan you one with a deposit...

Nit hard to do yourself. Remember you can download the Srvc Man from the links in my signature and see how to do it. If it were mine I would be doing it myself.

do you have one for a 2002 because your link only has 2003-2006 or would a 2003 work?

03 will likely work. There cant be that much change from one year to the next that it wont be covered or at least get you close enough you cant figure it out on your own.

You might want to see what the part looks like before you buy it though. I have a 2002 so I bought a 2002 clockspring from advance. It was nothing like the one I had. Mine was the 2003 version.

if the light stays on for any period of time try wiggling the connector under the drivers seat and see if it goes away. those connectors loosening are pretty common. if not get the ORC scanned for codes and you will want to see if its the drivers squib or clockspring squib
