Default 6 speed getrag

does this tranny shift you to death or is it a great improvement over the earlier 5 speed?

Danny,
I am driving a new ram with the getrag 6 speed in it. I have the 3.73 lsd rear also. As far as shifting a bunch, I never really notice it. 1st gear is so low, I don't use it. Taller tires later on will remedy this. The great thing is, you can choose what ever gear combination you want, such as 3rd to 5th, or 2nd to 4th. 1st is synchro'd so it is usable, but strictly as "granny" at this point. If you are considering the getrag, the jury is still out as to the toughness of it. When I ordered mine, it was delayed due to an immediate recall to over fill the tranny through the shifter hole due to some apparent rear tailshaft bearing or seal problems. I have 3600 miles on mine now, so its much too soon to tell. I did purchase the 7 year 100,000 miles warranty for mine when I purchased it, for the above reason alone.
Hope this helps out!

one thing you didnt mention is if the engine is the gasser of the diesel. for the diesel the jury is still in session about the g-56 tranny. as it stands the one thing that concerns people the most is the dual mass flywheel, as well as the oil underfill.

haveing the DMF at first would lead someone to believe that the tranny is not capable of handeling the torque the engine is produceing. I know of instances where people with boxes have been having problems with the DMF. some corporations are looking into ways of replaceing this with their high end performance kits.

now with the tranny oil problem. I read somewhere where the oil fill hole was actualy drilled too low, this was causeing the output bearing to run dry and this caused the problems. pouring the quart of oil down the shifter did solve the problem. but the true answer is to have that oil fill hole a bit higher in the case.

weither the g-56 is any better or worse than the NV5600. I havent heard enough to truly tell. but from the start it looks like I made a good choice by getting the NV5600 in mine over the g-56.

Thanks Drew, I check out this forum every night when I get home from work, and almost with out exception, I learn something new!!! If the fill hole was drilled low, seems like the quality control and design team engineers would have dealt with that issue BEFORE they decided to stuff those trannies into our Hemi's. I don't doubt for a moment that you are most likely correct, the reason for the extended warranty--generally speaking, I never buy them, because most times I consider them a rip. I'm still waiting on the service manual cd I ordered from them, I'm sure the delay has something to do with how the tech writers are going to word the "overfill" on this one--it should be interesting!!
