New Engine
Hello all. I come on here often and lurk so just signed up and this is my first post
Anyway to my reason for finally joining and posting
My 2003 1500 4.7ltr. engine is toast...
destroyed heads and pistons... so i am engine shopping and going to be putting a new engine in and had a few questions.
Is it possible to just bolt on the 5.9ltr? and if so would i need computer etc?
and any good ideas on where to get a new engine? been doing lots of looking online and like to have some personal recommendations before buying

I don't believe the 5.9 will bolt up to your 545rfe. The easiest thing to do would be to find a 4.7 from 2003-2005. Some will tell you a 2002 4.7 is ok, but without PCM, TCM, and wiring harness, it is not. There have been 4.7s on ebay lately for around $1300 or so plus shipping.
A hemi swap would probably be easier than a 5.9 swap, but it's all about how much time, money and will you have to get it done. You could always grab a used 4.7 and put some better cams in it for power. I bought my hemi from a junkyard through ebay. I would check local junkyards first to avoid shipping costs if possible. Definitely check craigslist too. Good luck

T-Muns, thanks for getting right back to me. yeah the 4.7 would be the easiest for sure.
If I went with the 5.7 hemi would i have to change the PCM, TCM, and wiring harness also? just checking all of my options bc its the only chance i will get to do it i am sure.
thanks for your responses!

No prob. You'll definitely need the wiring harness. I'm wondering if your TCM would work. I think your 2003 is programmed to do a 5-speed like the hemi. My 2002 TCM was the older 4 speed style.
Either way, you'll probably need the PCM. I would imagine you may be able to have someone flash your current PCM since it is NGC, but really, if you're getting the engine from a junkyard or a truck that's being parted out, you might as well grab everything you can from it. Most places will give you that stuff if it means you'll buy the engine. Personally, I would get the PCM & TCM from the hemi truck.
You'll need some other things as well. You can check out my thread here for a list of stuff. There are also threads by berndog67 and HemiDak-Quad.

I wouldn't go buying a used '03 4.7L because they all have the same common failures.
Since you have everything else, the most practical solution and the cheapest in the long run, would be to purchase a reman 4.7 long block. Don't go saving a few bucks by purchasing a durango or dakota 4.7L because they won't all work. They have diff sprockets on the cranks that won't fit your parts so be very careful.
Here's an example;
JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 8-287 4.7L VIN 8th Digit N 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel current generation engine controller
DODGE DAKOTA PICKUP 2000 2001 2002 4.7L 8-287 VIN 8th Digit N 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel current generation engine controller
DODGE DURANGO 2000 2001 2002 4.7L 8-287 VIN 8th Digit N 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel current generation engine controller
DODGE 1500 PICKUP 2002 4.7L 8-287 VIN 8th Digit N 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheelcurrent generation engine controller
