Default 04 Transmission ID

I have an 04 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi. To my understanding, you had an option on automatics between the four and five speed models. How can you distinguish between the two? Where are the identifiers so you know you have either the four or five speed auto? Is there a difference in tranny pans, or what do I look for so I can find out. I bought the truck used, and I have no clue if it's a four or five speed. Counting shifts and watching the tach has been fruitless as well because it shifts smoothly.

There is a sticker on the Transmission on the drivers side right below the tcm connector, it should indicate the model # if the sticker is gone the model is also stamped into the casing right below the sticker placement.

I found a sticker in the glove box that shows mine is the five speed automatic. Now, next question. Has there been any major faults with these trannys? I've heard from another Ram owner (1 year newer than mine) that the five speeds had an issue with the revers band breaking. Any thoughts?

The transmissions use no bands, they are fully electronic.

The solenoid pack seems to be a weak spot and improper filter insertion can cause issues also.

i just want to pass this on that i have an 02 ram with a 4.7,,, i just put a tranny in it that came out of a 05 ram with a 5.7 hemi..everything is working fine so far... the only difference in the two tranny's was my tranny had a black plug, and the 05 tranny has a white plug with a plastic thing inside the tcm connector that i just popped out with needle nose pliers and plugged in my connector....
if you change your tranny just make sure you get the fluid level right (ATF+4). i had a buddy put mine in while i did something else and he put almost 2 Litres too much, causing my truck to stall when coming to a stop. i drained some and all is good now.

All HEMI transmissions have the 545rfe which is a 5 speed auto trans. If you want to know everything about the trans then click on the link in my signature to download the 04 Service Manual and look at page 2014
