If you just want a decent LSD that won't grenade on you then all you'll need Is the LSD of your choice (mines a DTT and is great) and an install kit.
However most people when they're into the diff that deep change out the gears at the same time. Especially if they gave the horrible 3:55's with 20" wheels.
Dont forget..... If your a 4x4 you will also have to change out the front gears as well

Why would you ask him if he owned a piece of wood? what would he use that for? LMAO...

A 2 wheel drive truck is a 4x2...

To the OP, pretty much what Al said, you don't need anything besides the LSD, but gears would sure be nice...

And everyone has an opinion. I have the Auburn in mine

Adding a master kit to the LSD and gears is also something to look at

You'll need the carrier bearings and also a shim kit.

If your thinking you can open up the differential and do an easy swap out, your mistaken. This isn't like a rotor change or a muffler swap. You need specific tools and knolwedge, not to mention you must take both wheels and brake assemblies off to slide the axles out before allowing the LSD to be taken out. You must measure backlash(micrometer) and preload(special spanner tool) ohh, and a vernier caliper to measure the thickness of the baseplate and shims for the lsd carrier.
Garage install will be a couple hundred as long as you have all the parts and oil. Follow the limited slip directions you purchase for oil instructions and your owners manual for amount(2.5qts)

I was under the impression the 9.25" had adjustable preload without shims?

A dial indicator and magnet base can be had for around 20-30 bucks for measuring the correct backlash. A spring gauge for the preload are pretty easy to find. I'm not sure on the preload specs though.
