Default no power to starter

Hello, I have a 2007 Dodge 2500 4x4 ,5.9 diesel. My batteries shorted out and I tried to crank with the battery charger .Nothing. I replaced the batteries and now when I turn the key I am not getting any power to the starter.I can disconnect the small wire to the starter and jump the starter and it will spin but no start. Can anyone help? thanks Also I read on the inner fender that you should not use more than cranking volts to start. I pulled the plastic cover off to get to the ignition switch and there is a small box that fits around the switch can anyone tell me what this does??Thank Cecil

Possibly a relay, when you turn the key to on does your dash light up as normal?

Welcome to the site.

Im curious on how the batteries shorted out?

Since you know the starter is good, it seems it is not getting 12v to the solenoid from the ignition switch from that smaller wire.

You really need to look at the electrical schematics in a manual.

I have a similar problem with my 2000 1-ton. It seems to have plenty of power in the batteries, and a mechanic jumped it from the little wire on the starter, but now I can't even get that to go... Any ideas?

You can download a copy of the service manual from the links in my signature

I once had an issue like this I fought for 2-3 days and chased down fuses, wiring, relays and everything else. I even took down the starter and checked it.

In the end, I had a bad connection for the main starter wire at the battery terminal
