I just had the carrier bearings replaced in my truck, under warranty, by the dealer. They stated that they were completely shot. Found lots of pieces in the dif. Said it took about 5 hours with the lift and an experrienced technician. Would have cost me about $900 +.

you will need a way to pull or grind off the old bearings from the carrier. And press on new bearings so you WILL need a press. You will also need a backlash adjuster tool and a dial caliper gauge with magnetic base to measure and adjust backlash. If these terms mean nothing to you, take it to a shop or read, read, read. The difficult part is adjusting backlash to within thousandths of an inch. I would recommend measuring backlash BEFORE removing or messing with the carrier. That would ensure you set it back to the way it was.
