What do you guys think about oil?
ORIGINAL: Gone Fishin
Batphreak--do you have any idea what the micron rating of the supertech filters you use is. I currently use mobil1 filters which are rated at 2-4 micron, which is good--better than most in fact, but the smaller the particle it catches, the longer those Babbitts are going to last, particularly if off-roading is in the picture. I currently have set my NEW truck up on a 2500 miles schedule for the oil changes. Ya, I know it seems rediculously low, but, better to be safe than sorry, and having a background in industrial refrigeration--you find out after a while just how fast an oil can break down when it gets hard use.

Thankyou very much for the insight.
Reliability testing is essential to the reputation of a product in the publics eye--regardless of who actually manufacters it. Do you have any additional insight as to the mileage for the switch to synthetics?? The idea being to try to hit the mark of peak performance(on the stock engine) in terms of cylinder sealing. Once synthetic is started, the overall wear rate is dramatically reduced. But at what point is this achieved at?? It is my thinking right now, to start using Amzoil, and change it every 5k miles with a filter change at 2500, unless during the long term process I see reason to shorten the change frequency.
Thanks Again!!

Thanks for all of the info. I went with the synthetic and a purolator oil filter.
Wasn't easy though. Went to AutoZone, Pepboys and Walmart, no 5w20 oil, no filter at any of these locations.
Found a advanced auto parts that had to order the filter but they did have the oil.
The dealership did my first oil change. When I went to change it this time less than 6 quarts came out.

In my Mustang GT I ran Havoline synthetic with K&N oil filter, I dont' think there is a better oil filter in my opinion, cost over 10 bucks now though. I changed at 5,000 mi intervals. I think its silly to try to change the filter more often than the oil, also my opinion.
