Default What oil are you using?

I tried a search and had no luck.

I have an 06' Hemi Quad cab, Auto. 4x4. 88,000 miles. Original owner. Never towed anything, never gone off road, never hauled anything over 200-300 pounds and have no plans to in the future. I do not "race" or beat on the truck. Use only 89 octane gas. Change oil every 3-4k miles and use Mobil 1 5W20 and Mobil 1 filters. Use paper air filters, never K&N. I live in mass so the tempatures are typically 100 or less in the summer and teens in the winter. Have engine coolant heater and oil pan heater for the winter.

Should i just stick with 5W20 year round? Or does anybody reccomend something different? Some locals have suggested 10W30 for the summer.

Also, last oil change a few weeks ago, i noticed copper colored particles in the oil that drained from the filter while it was laying in the drain pan. Not a lot. But noticeable. Paste like consistency. Nothing that looked silver though. Is this normal? I have not really looked at past filters so i cannot say for certain if this is something that started recently. Other forums i have browsed (not Dodge) have had people mention this as well and the consensus is that it is normal wear.

You didn't search too good...

Also, switching to 10w30 is a sure way to screw up the MDS system... With an MDS Hemi, 5w20 is imperative for proper operation...

For me, the search function has been intermittently saying "no results" recently, even though I know good and well there are many results as I have searched for the same thing before, so maybe the OP is having those issues as well...

Anyway, I started off buying two 5 qt jugs of Mopar 5w20 (and then one jug for the 2nd, 4th, 6th Oil change as the truck needs 1 and 1/2) then the dealer asked me why I didn't just bring the empty jugs and have them fill it from their bulk...So that's what I started doing. Filter and 1 jug refill just the other day was $18 and some change out the door

5w20 is required for a HEMI with MDS.. also the other motors require it as well..

5W20 seems to be the future I would say 75 percent of new gasoline vehicles use this exact weight of motor oil.

I personally use Mobil 1 oil and filters. Royal Purple is good as well, Castrol I hear good things about too. Amsoil is good too from what I hear but I don't like that it can't be found at the regular parts stores.

I don't have MDS so I have used everything from 5w20 to 15w50. I stick with 5w30 now (which the manual recommends on my 2004 truck)

The grade is up to something like "SG" maybe higher. The viscosity is what you what to watch. Your '06 with MDS wants 5w-20.

That could be particulate from the inside of the filter itself. I know I've read a bit about Frams (and Fram makes a percentage of the Mopar filters) showing particulate at change time. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Change filter brands and see if you have it with the different brands...

I mentioned in my original post that i used Mobil 1 filters. Based on all the sources online i have consulted, including the epic filter review thread. The Mobil 1 filter got some of the highest marks. In fact, other then the price, i have yet to see any negative posts about those filters.

The metallic paste i have found is not from the filter. The filter is made of paper and steel. This is a copper color.
