Default Inserting new quick disconnect retainer spring?

I googled this and after 5 pages I did not find the info I was after. Basically in the process of fixing my truck I had removed the fuel line (to the fuel rail) the wrong way destroying and pulling out the retaining spring.

Rather than buy a new 75 dollar fuel line I found a new 3/8 retaining spring at NAPA for 3 bucks. How do I get it in there correctly so I can then use the special tool to re-attach it to the fuel rail? Which way does i go in?
