Anything happen that you can think of to cause it? If it doesn't bother you and you don't have the cash to get it fixed it could be fine for quite awhile, but if it gets louder you should probably have someone take a look at it.

If it starts growling at you any louder than it is, It may be the pinion bearings/races. The first time it happened to me, I was on the way back from Madison, and stopped for gas. It was only making a slight wine when I pulled in, but about 10 miles after I left the station, the rear started HOWLING. Races were REALLY pitted looked like rough asphalt. After two sets under warranty, and a complete rebuild after total axle failure, I replaced the axle.

I heard a loud squeak once in awhile under acceleration, and my pinion had some play in it pretty soon. I swapped out the whole rear diff for $350 from a 2007 with 35,000 km's. Money well spent. For that price I can wait until the clips blow up and swap in another. Takes 2 hours with a lift and air tools, about 6 hours when the brake lines don't want to cooperate and you have to fight with the sensors and you don't have much for tools lol.

On my 2006 Ram 1500 5.7Hemi soon after I bought it around three years ago, I started hearing a noise from the read end when I accelerated out of a corner from a stop.
Thought it might be the brake calipers, etc...Checked them, & OK.
Anyway, I met some guy at the pet store, he said he was a mechanic with tons of Dodge experience. I asked him about the noise and he interrupted me and told me what it was. He said that it was a small $5 clip that held the gears in the housing that will come loose after a while. If you re-adjust the clip or just replace it, he said no sweat! If you wait until the gears come completely loose, it will grind the crap out of your read-end.
I haven't tried this yet, but it sure sounded right!
When I do try it within the next couple weeks, I will report..
