Default 2002 dodge ram 4.7 idle prom and over heating.

Hello all . These might be easy for you guys.

First off I know nothing about trucks......sorry

problem 1... truck over heats. water comes out my overflow hose. one side i can keep hand on it. touch warm. Other side hot hot hot

my guess....radiator pluged. buy new one.

problem 2... Truck idle(RPM) surge when parked and driving down road with cruise on or off.

my guess...plugs and wires????????

Thanks bolt.

4.7s have a bad habit of blowing head gaskets or cracking heads when getting hot so be careful.

Clean your TB and check for an air leak somewhere. Plugs and wires isnt a bad place to start but I doubt thats it

Throttle body and I'd be looking for a vacuum leak around the TB, because that's more indicative of your second issue.

As for the first, heed 'Weed. The 4.7s have the cooling channels VERY close to the cylinder walls, it doesn't rebound well from an overheat which at best results in a blown head gasket and often times causes a head failure...

THANKS.

Problem # 2 FIXED. I read about four hours on here and learned alot.
clean my tb and messed with my tps.

Now onto problem #1..............more reading now

Don't think it a head gasket.(would see water forced out right) I can run truck in park, and water flows fine(45 minutes). I think plugged. is there a way to check?

thanks

A blown head gaskets would leak water inside the engine and be burnt off in the cylinder and possibly produce a white smoke out the tail pipe. It all depends on how bad the leak it is. It could be so small it would drive fine but maybe run hot and might not smoke at all out the pipe. You would just notice a loss of coolant.

Could be that the impeller on the heads inside of the water pump is broken loose from the shaft so although there pulley is turning, the pump is not circulating water which could explain why there seems to be no clog not hot water circulating through the radiator
