Default Another towing question...

Hey guys.
I have an 07 Ram Sport 1500 quad cab 5.7L Hemi 4x4. I'm not sure of gear ratios etc. It has the factory tow package.

I'm trying to figure out if towing my boat from Ohio to Florida (once only) will be safe and feasable.

I cannot seem to get a straight answer on tow capacity.

The boat is a 27 ft Formula with a dry weight of approx 5,500 lbs. The double axle trailer adds about 1500lbs. So a total of approx 7k lbs.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm gonna assume 3.92 with factory tow BUT that's not always the case. But you'll have a tranny cooler with the package which is imperative.

Max rating is around 8000# with 3.55s & 9000# with the 3.92s, subtract 1000# if you have 20" wheels.

In either case you'll be fine, especially since I'd imagine a trailer that size would be equipped with at least surge brakes.

I think I'd consider picking up a WD hitch for that trip though. The weight is close enough to your capacity that I think it would be a GREAT $200 insurance policy. You'll be able to handle that load a LOT easier...

Weight Distributing hitch. It forces some weight off the hitch and onto the truck's and trailer's axles. Helps it ride more level with less squat.

Normally, a Weight Distributing Hitch (which also minimizes side to side sway) is recommended any time you tow in excess of 2/3 the vehicles maximum towing capacity...

You Also will need to have a Trailer Braking controller plugged into your vehicle. Most states anything over 3,000 you must have the brake controller by state laws and insurance coverage.

Well, heres the results for anyone interested.
Boat weighed 5800lbs empty.
Trailer weighed 1500 lbs.
Had about 40 gallons fuel in boat
roughly about 250 lbs of gear and things in boat
two adults, two dogs.
Roughly I'd estimate 8k lbs in total.

towed from Western end of Lake Erie in Ohio to Fort Lauderdale down I75 through OH, KY, TN, GA, and FL.

Temp never got high, fuel economy in mountains was ~11.5 mpg's, flatter areas it was between 13-14mpg's.

Used tow/haul mode the whole trip, and ran AC from GA to FL.

Ran about 65 mph the better part of trip.

Thanks all for the advice.

I'd say that were pretty good...

Boats aren't bad because they are very aerodynamic now it that was an enclosed trailer...
