Default Buying out of state

Yay...first post blues....

Anyhoo, I've been researching alot on various different sites, I must have read this site front to back, top to bottom. I'm currently on "vacation", if you will, in Pennsylvania and upstate New York till the end of the month. I am seriously thinking about trading in my Jetta on a new truck by the end of the week, most likely in northeast PA, if the prices are right. I've looked a bit around Little Rock, where Uncle Sam currently has me living, and I think prices will actually be cheaper up here. I wans't planning on buying right now, but with these "employee discounts", it's hard to pass up right now.

Anyone ever bought out of state before? What all is involved? Since PA has annual inspections and other requirements, I'll most likely transfer registration to Arkansas (or whatever state I happen to be in by that point...) somewhere down the line. How do taxes and such work? This will not be my first new vehicle, but first from out of state. Anyone have any idea how buying a new car in PA works? Just like anywhere else; buy, pay taxes and registration? That's the part I'm dreading. When I bought my Tacoma a few years ago, I traded in a '98 Ranger and ended up paying almost 2K in taxes just to register the damn thing. I don't have that kind of cash again to do that.

I was down to the Nissan Titan and the Ram, but after much research, I think I'm going with the Ram, for a few reasons. Now, after all I've read here, I'm wondering which engine will be best. It seems that the Hemi is the way to go for the 1500. Gas mileage is about equal, and all the rest. However, I don't know a thing about diesel engines. I drive them at work, but don't have to maintain them...or pay to put fuel in them. I've heard that they are better on fuel mileage and are pretty durable in the long run. Any advantages over a gasoline engine for day to day use? I haul my motorcycles and dirtbikes around (or...will...when I get another truck), but don't do much towing. I will be getting a QC 4x4 (yes, I will be making use of the additional axle). They don't offer the CTD in the 1500, correct? So, is it worth the price difference for the 2500?

Also, what is the break in period like? I am sure I can put 500 miles on the thing before hitting the highway on the 28th, but if it's 1000 miles, I don't know...

Yes, In my opinion, it is worth it to get the 3/4 ton. The differentials are heavier duty, and not a substantial weight difference. The ride is a little stiffer,but after it settles in, and you get the tire pressure corrected, from the factory they are pumped up to 80 psi, normal street use calls for 40--big difference! The factory 1500 diff's are "LD" 9-1/4 or 9-1/2"
The "LD" stands for light duty. I plan on driving mine until the wheels fall off--so the heavier duty setup. This chasis is what the Power Wagon is based on, but it is even heavier duty with 11-1/2" locking diff's front and back. I didn't buy mine to climb mountains. If you opt to get the diesel, there are a ton of 3/4 ton units out there already, but they are mostly one's bought up for the construction business or similar. You may want to consider it in the 3/4 ton as this is an excellent platform for it--it will handle the torque--if you feel the need for the power is there. Lots of aftermarket options available for the CTD also, where as the Hemi engine being so new, doesn't have many mods out there yet, but I'm sure in time it will. Don't get me wrong, my hemi is more than capable of a "two tire " fire anytime, any place. But the CTD will easily roast them off---stock!!!

Don't wait too long if you feel the CTD is something you are considering, I understand that they are planning on changing to a Mercedes-Bentz unit. I'm sure others here on the forum can elaborate on this more, especially as to when.
