Default Coolant leak, maybe water pump.

Hello all, I am new to the forum. I have a 2004 1500 4x4 Quad Cab, with the 4.7L. I just started having issues with a slow coolant leak and I believe it is becoming progressively worse.

I believe it is coming from the water pump. The coolant seems to pool up right below the crank pulley at the front of the oil pan. It is hard to get a good angle with a flashlight, but it looks like the bottom of the water pump is wet. Just wondering where to start and any tricks that may help with the water pump replacement.

I'm a soldier currently stationed at Fort Carson, CO and I'm leaving for the field tomorrow for a few weeks; so if I don't reply for a while that is why, but any input would be appreciated to expedite the project when I get back. Thank you in advace for the feedback.

Check the FAQ section or weedahoe's signature as he has downloadable links for your years service manual. it will give step-by-step instructions, but overall it's not too bad.
I would def flush the coolant system as the 4.7L's are known for radiator clogging due to insufficient coolant flush intervals! This in turn causes overheated engines and warped heads.

I would reccomend changing your t-stat as well why your coolant system is drained and while your already making a mess..haha

Also, I like to use carboard under the truck while I'm working as it absorbs 99% of the mess if not all(granted you are dumping most of the fluid in a bucket and not directly on the ground..lol) It's a good splash shield for the garage floor or driveway.

Overall though you gotta find out where that leak is coming from and stay on top of it because there are a lot of 4.7s on here that over heat and dont do good afterwards

Thanks for the help. I'm finally back to fix my truck so I'll do it tomorrow. It is definitely the water pump. It is leaking from the weep hole. I figure I will go ahead and replace the hoses, serpentine belt, and t-stat while I'm at it.

On a separate note. The truck does not have the red HOAT antifreeze in it either. The previous owner must have just used regular 50/50. Could this be the source of my problem to begin with? Just curious.
