I have only had my new Ram one week, 400 miles now, and today it did something that concerns me. Was pulling out of the barber shop today and when I tried to shift the auto tranny from rev to drive it went to the D position but nothing happened, the truck wouldnt move. Shifted back to park and then to D again and the thing made a clunk as it went into gear but it obviously went into the wrong gear. Was a noticable power/torque loss and whatever higher gear it went into it would not shift out of it. Engine light came on, luckily I was only a couple of miles from the dealer, so I drove it in. They checked it out and I was in a hurry to get to a job so I really dont remember exaclty what he called the thing, but said that some kind of box or something with codes in it that controls the tranny, got a glitch or something and he reprogrammed it. This seems to have fixed the problem for now as the tranny is shifting normally again. However, this concerns me. This thing is NEW for crying out loud! Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it on new rams? Can I expect it to happed again? This concerns me because I have heard that past Dodges have had a huge number of transmission problems but I bought because I thought Dodge had this ironed out as Consumer reports listed the trannys at above average since 02. What does everyone think? Any of you having tranny problems with newer rams?

 

The new transmissions in the Ram are pretty stout and they have fixed almost all the bugs from the old one. There is an occasional electric solenoid that goes out that we hear of from time to time, but overall, there are extremely few problems out of these trannies. I doubt you'll have much trouble now that it has been reprogrammed.

I had a one time (in four years) electronic glitch in another vehicle and no one ever figured out what happened. At least with your truck they seemed to have a clue, or at least talked a good game.

Hey everybody. New guy here. I don't know if this is tranny related, but I have the feeling it is. When I am at idle I occaisionally hear this thunk. When I DO hear it it is usually followed up by another and sometimes another. I haven't really timed the thunks, but I am guessing it's one minute intervals. Has anybody experienced this?

I had almost the exact same problem, at the same time, except they replaced the Transmission Solonoid Pack.

 

My 05 has done it to me about 5 times. Ijust give it some gas then it will enguage. I took it in to the dealer and they did nothing for me.

 

The older RAMS had a lot of transmission problems. The new ones don't. As far as shifting into a high gear and staying there, that is commonly referred to as the "limp home mode". When a problem is detected your transmission goes into this mode so you aren't sitting on the side of the expressway. If the problem isn't too serious you can turn the key off and restart it and it may go back into regular mode.

 

Hey DeWalt, you might be hearing the A/c compressor kicking on. It will make the noise like you stated when it kicks on. It cycles so that is why you hear it every little bit. Try turning the compressor off and see if the sound stops.

 

I had a transmission problem.

Ive got an '05 5.7 2wd.

The transmission module was bad and the computer needed a flash.

Not even the hint of a problem since then.
