Default fuel sending unit replaced, but not registering to my fuel gauge? please help..

I posted a few days ago that I had a fuel leak in my tank. I decided to take the bed off and see what the issue was. Good thing I went the route of taking the bed off or I would have not found the problem. The supply nipple out of the sending unit was cracked and squirting gas.

I replaced the whole unit and reattached all connections. Filled the tank with fuel about 5 gallons...nothing registered on my fuel gauge. I went the gas station and filled it with another 5 gallons, not wanting to fill it all the way in case I need to do more work. The gauge register little over 1/4 tank. I thought this was odd as it should have registered around 1/2 a tank. I drove back home and after a mile the gauge dropped to zero. I was stumped.

I went to Autozone where I got the unit from and they said first try to reset everything by disconnecting the battery for 10 min. I did this, not changed. Next they told me to pull the unit out and hook it up to the wire harness turn the key on and work the float manually to see if the gauge would register. Nothing, they said I may have a bad unit.

I filled the tank all the way up thinking the unit would need to reset or calibrate itself with a full tank. After filling to full the gauge read just over 3/4 full, a mile into the drive home, gauge fell to zero again.

This morning on my way to work, the gauge randomly came up to 3/4 of a tank and then dropped to zero again.

I am stumped. Is there something that needs to be reset, done differently or is the unit bad? Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do, try...??? I am very frustrated with this process. The pump is working fine or seems to be as I am still getting fuel delivered.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Please help.

Autozone is getting me another unit shipped in and we are going to swap it out at the store. Guess I will see what happens with this new unit. Frustrated!

Problem solved. The new unit was defective and put in a new on, worked right away. Now to put the bed back on.

Just some information to pass along to you all. I got the sending/fuel pump/filter unit at Autozone and it is an Airtex brand. I paid $198.99. Found out Airtex gets these units from Mopar and just relables them. Airtex has not yet started to make their own version yet. So if you are a person who has to have OEM parts here you go. I called my local Dodge dealership and it was going to be $310 and they did not have it in stock. Autozone keeps them in stock and even had a new one trucked in over lunch since mine was still not working. We swapped it out in the parking lot. Very helpful.

I would definitely have to be a supporter of taking your bed off to work on fuel issues. I wouls think it would be so much more difficult to drop the tank and do some of this work, have to put it back up, take it down, put it up....etc.

I could also still drive my truck while doing all this without have to put my tank back up, take it down, put it up...etc. My setup is a bit redneck, tailights ziptied to the bumper, fuel fill supported by a pipe, block of wood and some bailing wire. Might try to post a pic of it. It all worked out.
