Default 2005 hemi 5.7 - need a stronger tranny

My 2005 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi 4x4 isn't strong enough to pull a dump trailer. I know I should at least have a 2500 with a Cummins but I'm stuck for the time being with what I have. It's a nice little sport truck but definately not a work truck.

I need to put another 60,000 miles on it to have made my purchase almost worthwhile financially. presently I have 120,000 miles on it.

This summer I pulled some big loads and now the tranny slips. What I need to know is which heavy duty tranny I could buy to match up to the motor I'm running now. The stock tranny isn't cutting it.

Thanks in advance to any info.

Maybe go with a junk yard oem tranny. $600-800 to maybe go the extra 60k. Also invest in a 24 row tranny cooler for less than $200.

If you really want a strong tranny with a great warranty, check this one out. A coouple people run it with turbo's and superchargers and it holds fine.

Yep ATS is the way to go on this. It's gonna be my next tranny when mine eventually goes.

If it got 120k out of the original transmission, why would you need something special to get another 60? What have you done to the engine to make it so much more powerful than stock? Does the truck have the factory tow package or at least a transmission cooler? How much trailer weight are you referring to?

If you hook up the Queen Mary behind an average 100k mile old truck, you'll find what's worn out very quickly.

The truck never pulled much until this summer. As soon as a yard of stone was hauled 10 times it started to slip. I never pulled it hard either. I let it go easy during the loads. Over the years I worked alot of finish carpentry inside new homes... After years of boredom, I'm now outdoors landscaping and such. Need pull power. Even after a couple hundred thousand miles being drivin like a granny the tranny shouldnt be tired enough to fail like it did. In all these miles I've only had to change a tension pully, and the brakes.. That's how easy it ran.

Very nice tranny Arctodus .... The cost is up there however. I'm hoping for the option of using a tranny from another factory truck that I can pull at the scrapyards here.

Exactly.. I can get the same one for 86$ when the next one shows up, but thought it would be a good idea to see if other models with more power would match up correctly.

Great idea on the cooler, I'll look into it. Is this an aftermarket or can i find it in the junk yard ?

You can fab something up with aftermarket, but a factory 1 ton cooler will go a long ways and it's pretty much bolt in. On the downside, that 1 ton trans cooler might not let your fluid get warm enough unless you are towing/hauling constantly.

My best googling shows that 1 yard of stone = around 3k lbs. If this load is in a trailer I fail to see how it puts much load on the truck.
