Default burning oil

i have a 2002 dodge ram 4.7 2wd.. 125,XXX miles. sometimes on start up a lil puff of blue smoke from time to time.. and on hard accelerations a mild to moderate puff of blue smoke will come out the tail pipe.. ive checked the plugs they are clean and in working order.. the cat has been of the truck for sometime now? not sure if that could be causing the problem it only uses a 1/4 - 1/2 of a quart a week and a half depending on how much i drive it and how hard! ive checked the pcv not realy sure what to look for on it but i did notice that the ball bearing did move around in it and there was some oil deposits in the pcv valve? should i try i thicker weight oil ive been using 5w 30? thanks guys please let me no on your thoughts..

Mine has started doing the start-up puff. Usually it's the valve stem seals. Oil leaks down the stems into the combustion chambers. When you start it up, the oil burns. Heavier oil may help. I'll just live with mine for a while.

Sorry, but burning oil isnt exactly something to fix by thick oil. It happens when the piston walls were scarred by dirty air, so when the oil runs up on it, the oil escapes and it's burnt. In this case, it seems that the air intake was sucking up dirty air (either a leak or your air filter has been bad for a long time). Sorry, I don't know how to fix it after it starts to actually burn the oil though...

Dirty air? Oil burns for more reasons than scarred cylinder walls. The start-up puff is oil that has leaked down the valve stems, through their seals into the combustion chamber and is burned on start-up. Heavier oil will very likely slow down the leaking.

Your version is the result of the oil ring allowing oil up past it and no, heavier oil won't help that.

replace your PCV valve. That did the trick for me.

Might also try running some Seafoam through the intake, knock some of the carbon of stuff.

As it has been for many decades, the way to tell if it is rings or valvetrain, is to buy the guage kit and perform a leakdown test. The proccedure can be found all over the web or in a repair manual. It's rarer for the rings to go first in a fuel injected vehicle.
