switching to synthetic oil
Ain't seen a Hemi yet fail from the proper oil changed at reasonable intervals, but I do question the fact that "they" say 87 octane gas is "OK, but not recommended". Seen quite a few cylinder failures.where 87 gas was the culprit. Although every Ram engineer I've talked to said that the 87 fuel thing didn't come from the engineers and strongly recommend 89 octane fuel - off the record, of course...

And the reccomendations:

My old man was a Fram nut, he was a mechanic by trade too from high school until he was in his mid-30s. Did some high end performance type - racing stuff back in the early to mid '70s. But maybe Fram was decent back then.
I won't touch one!
I tend to stick to Wix or Purolator, Mobil 1 or one of the branded ones made by Champion Labs (K&N, RP, etc.)...

All I know, is that with Mobile 1 oil and filter, my oil is grey at worst when I change it at ~5k. Darkest the oil has ever been was the day I bought it and dumped whatever was already in it (not synthetic).
Actually, correct me if I am wrong, but if the oil is clean after 3000 miles, then it's not doing what it is supposed to do? There are detergents in oil that clean your engine. If the oil is darker, then it's doing it's job cleaning the engine, getting rid of sludge and contaminants, no? I thought that's how the basic principle worked.
Huh, i never really figured fram to be a poor filter. But after doing some reading and research definitly seems like it isnt what i thought it was. Im not to concerned about it as like i said i change the oil every 3000 no matter what. Filter wise i see the mopar ones available, anyone know anyting about these? Im not looking for super high end performance here, something reasonably priced and will meet expectations.

If you want a good, low price filter buy a Purolator, if you want to spend more then Wix (Napa Gold), Mobil 1, Royal Purple and K&N are good filters...
Mopar filters are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Last I heard they had contracts with four different manufacturers, one was Fram (bad), one was Champion Labs (great).

Well said.
It is NOT nessecary to change a filter at 3,000 miles even if you are running your oil longer. That is a proven fact. Ask anybody running an oil pressure gauge as well.
Unless you are running in extreme conditions putting immense loads on your truck day in and day out, you could easily go 4-5k between and oil and filter change with absolutley no negative impact at all on your engines lifespan. I proved that fact 30,000 miles ago by doing a lube oil sample right before an oil change at 3,000 miles and then right before an oil change at 5,000 miles. The numbers were different, but even at 5k, were not even close to being an issue.
