There are o-rings where the spark plug tubes are and the valve cover seal is a big rubber ring basically. PITA to get in and around, but worth it to avoid the dealer cost.

I bought a valve cover and spark plug seal kit, for a little over $40 form memory. For when I do my 03 springs modification. Just in case the OEM's were damaged.
Got them from Hensons at the same time I got my springs and spark plugs and stuff.

They are gouging you IMO. Even at dealer pricing, the valve cover and spark plug seal kit is under $100 and I'd say a seasoned mechanic would probably take 2 hours for the install where it might take me three hours. This is not a technically difficult job and you can do it in probably less than half a day. So it depends on if half a day of your time is worth about $500 in labor...

If the valve cover gaskets are bad then yeah, they should be replaced pretty quicky but I've never seen anybody absolutely "need" plug seals. Yeah a bit of oil getting down to the plugs diminishes performance a tad, but I've not seen it be a major issue. Plug seals started out as a "performance upgrade" and now I'm hearing dealers say people "need" them more and more. That said, if you are gonna do the valve gaskets, it's not a bad time to do plug seals, the additional cost is minimal...
