Default Satellite antenna placement?

I've seen several threads where guys put the gps antenna under the dash cover, has anyone done this with an xm antenna? Also thought about putting it under the plastic cowl cover where the wipers are.

Your input is appreciated!

Under the cover? Satellite communications are line-of-sight, right? Not sure how there could be any reception if the path is blocked.

Under the plastic cover. My reasoning is that if the plastic affected the reception then the antenna wouldn't be housed in plastic...but wondering if anyone had tested my theory for me

My guess is it would have difficulty. Otherwise, why are all the antennae mounted on the roof? If they worked under the plastic dash cover, why spend the money running a cable to the roof?
