Default Ac compressor

I have a question about the AC on an 03 1500 5.7 HEMI. My air stopped working a while back and I'm back from college and ready to fix it. My air doesn't really blow cold but my heat works great as of this morning. When I have the hood popped and I turn my AC on about 5 seconds in, the wheel at the front of the AC compressor starts to spin and makes a grinding noise.

Is my compressor shot? If so I'm going to buy a new one but just want to hear some opinions on it before I start repair.

Thank you!!

Sounds like it. Does the compressor cycle often (several times/minute)? Are you familiar with this repair?

That doesn't sound pretty at all. If you've never done this before, it's best left to the pros. The system has to be evacuated to all the moisture and other foreign stuff out and be properly recharged. You may also have problems you're not aware of.
