Default Gen 3 Ram Cummins and Transmissions

Were the transmissions supplied with the Gen 3 Rams & Cummins all the same? I am considering a Gen 3 vintage Ram with a Cummins for a plow truck and have heard from more than one Ram/Cummins owner that they have had trans problems which required either re-build or replacement. Could someone offer an experienced opinion(s) of their own? I don't want to make a decision that I will be sorry for.

Default ram trans

make sure trans is serviced properly ,then install the biggest trans cooler you can find.[an external filter is not a bad idea too].change the filter and fluid every year and you should not have any problems.by the way i drive a06 2wd diesel.

The 5.9l cummins from 2003 to 2007 was paired to the 48RE, a stronger version of the 4-speed 47RE. The 6.7l cummins from 2007 to 2009 used the 6-speed 68RFE, while the 6.7l used in the chassis cabs was paired to the Aisin AS68RC. From what I can gather around the internet, the 48RE is praised for being a very strong transmission, if the cummins is left in stock form. However, adding power to the engine quickly eats up the 4-speed transmission. Biggest complaint is the lack of a 5th gear. As a whole though, it seems the 48RE is a well-praised piece of equipment, with the term "bulletproof" showing up a lot in its discussion. As far as I can see, you would not be disappointed.
