DOWNSHIFTS ALL THE TIME
04 RAM 1500 QC 4.7L
THE TRUCK DOES WELL ON FLAT LAND, BUT THE SLIGHTEST HILL, THE TRUCK LOOSES SPEED INSTEAD OF KEEPING A CONSTANT SPEED, ASWELL AS ALWAYS DOWNSHIFTING. I HAVE PUT SINGLE 3" EXHUAST WITH A FLOW MASTER & K&N FILTER.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO RE-PROGRAM THE TRANNY? TRUCK HAS THE LOOKS BUT IS UNDER-POWERED. PLEASE ADVISE.

I too feel your pain...I really don't believe that its underpowered....From a dead stop mine moves pretty good but once your going the trans dogs....I just think the dam trans tries to stay in overdrive too much.
Yes, take off speed is fine, it's geared @ 3.92rear, with the 20" wheels. Like you say it's when it gets into overdrive. So I tried running it in tow/haul. It still downshifts alot. It pretty bad trying to pass someone and the truck(LOUD EXHAUST) downshifts multiple times before you can even pass them. I live outside of Austin,Tx in the hill country.
You need gears! Throw a set of 4.56's in there and you will find that GOD did not make a hill steep enough to cause your transmission to down shift.

When I hit a hill the overdrive stays in gear and it pulles all the way to the top without shifting. Before the 4.56 swap I had 3.55's and it would downshift a mile before the hill just to get ready for it... The 4.56's are AWSOME!

Been a while since I've checked this site and I see that some other people have noticed tha same problem that the local Dodge dealer just fixed for me. Take you truck in and tell them it is downshifting or "hunting for the right gear" while towing. They have a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) that describes this problem and the computer "flash" that is needed to fix it. Takes a few minutes, was free under warranty and works like a miracle! My 2004 Quad Cab, 4X4 with 3:55 gears tows just fine now and it acts the way that it should have from the start. Good luck & enjoy!
