Resonator/Cat Converter
I have an 05 Ram with the 4.7lt and was looking for a very cheap and effective way to make a little louder but not annoying. I did some searching and found where a few ram owners have removed the resonator (which I think is the same as the cat converter). Most of these were done on the 5.7. My question is does the 4.7 have this resonator plumbed into the stock piping as well and if removed, how does it sound? Thanks
The resonator is not the same as the cat converter. They are at opposite ends of the system. I don't know if your's has the resonator, but it's real easy to check yourself. Go the the passenger side of the truck. Now walk back toward the rear wheel, near the tailpipe. Now bend down on one knee and look up behind the tire. Do you see an oval can on the tailpipe? If you do, that's the resonator. If you don't, must not have one.
Ditto, what mazz said; if you have the resonator, you can disconnect it and see if YOU like the sound any better before going to the trouble to get a replacement pipe.
Who likes which sounds is totally subjective and you'll have to decide for yourself.
All the best.

My 04 qc Hemi had two resonators. I took the one off at the rear wheel well and put the pipe back in the stock location. It sounded really good. Low enough to not have a lot of cab drone, but enough to know it was there. I never noticed any mileage or HP gains. With the Hemi it is hard to notice a little bit better performance.
Thanks fellas. So this thing has a cat and possibly two resonators? No wonder it is nice and quiet. I do plan on going dual exhaust at some point so removing the resonator(s) is a must anyway. I put about 100 miles on this truck daily and have kids that sit in the back seat so if it is too loud with it off, I'll just shell out to put it back on. Thanks again.

I removed my muffler and replaced it with a piece of straight 3" pipe.
I have straight pipe from the cats all the way back to the resonator.
I had a local exhuast shop cut a piece of pipe 39 inches long and notch it at both ends.
I re-used the clamps from the muffler to mount the pipe.
Cost me $25.
I got a better exhaust tone out of it and better gas mileage.

I dont have the truck anymore, however if I remember correctly there was one after the muffler and then one over the rear axle housing. I removed the one over the rearend. I could be completely wrong though. I now have an 05 4x4 and I havent even crawled under it yet. I do remember wondering why the Hemi Durango had only 330 HP and the truck had 345. The only thing I could see is that it had more resonators, I am guessing to keep noise down in the passenger compartment.
Either way, you pull the resonator off it will add a little grunt to your exhaust without sounding like a pulpwood truck.

Well after breifly looking at it yesterday (it was a little dark) I couldnt find the resonator behind passenger wheel. Here is what I saw...directly behind the tire was an englarged portion of the piping probably 8" long and about 4-5" in dia. Welded to this part was one of the brackets holding the whole system in place. A few feet back towards the engine was a huge barrel looking muffler. Further back towards the engine compartment were the cats. I am not sure if this small oval portion is what mazz was talking about. If someone can verify that it would be great. If my computer at home was working I could have snapped a pic.
Here is a pic of the resonator on my '05 Ram, reg. cab. I realize it may not be the same, but you can see placement, if nothing else.
Good luck.
