is the throttle body spacer worth adding? and will it work with the cold air intake?

 

It will work with the CAI but you will get zero benefits from it..its a paperweight on a fuel injected motor

 

then why is there such a hype over it?

 

And just where are you seeing hype? Car magazines from 1992?

Modern fuel injectors atomize the fuel unlike Carbs which relied on suction created by air traveling through the intake to draw fuel.
Besides, 3rd Gens like about every engine designed since the mid 90's have the injectors on the fuel rail - WAY after ANY benefit from a throttle body spacer would be realized.

But if you really want one, they do create a cool sounding whistle when air passes through them...

 

I never understood the concept behind TB spacers either. If it would have benefited, wouldn't they have made the TB an inch deeper to start with?

On the old GM TBI engines, the "dog bowl" (Hypertech Powercharger) aftermarket piece made a very noticeable gain in off-idle torque. That's because fuel and air mixed right there, like a carb, and not a foot inside the intake tract. I'll bet that low-tech lump made far more power below 2k rpm than my Hemi does. After that it isn't a contest

 

Because they are easy to make, and easy to install. People that produce them don't care if it helps, as long as they can get your money...
