Default Truck acts up while fueling up!!!

Has anyone one experienced this problem. When I shut the truck off to get gas everything is fine. This is now twice I left it running while fueling up(first, not knowing and second, to see if it happened again) and she will sputter out, have trouble starting, and drive rough. Even stalled at stop sign the first time. I never have any of those problem any other times. Anyone experience this???

I'm not sure why you would fuel the truck up while it is running. None-the-less, this sounds like a vacuum issue. The reason why you turn your truck off (besides safety reasons) is because it can cause issues with the fuel system. This is also the reason why we have gas caps. In order to fix this problem, I would turn the truck off each time you fill up.

I am also surprised this hasn't tripped a CEL, as I know it's fairly common with our trucks by just having a bad gas cap.

Yea i know the gas cap off cause the system to depressurize. Never had a problem on my explorer though so the first time was out of habit. second time was out of curiosity. but your right it should be off and when off no problem arises. Its funny though i just read this on ramforumz....

uummm... i kinda understand what you are talking about cause i have a 2004 also, i filled up a few times while the truck was running and i had the same problem(it stalled while i was still standing at the pump and even a time or 2 while i was driving after filling up).....my advice would be to not let the truck run while u are filling up, i turn mine off everytime now and havent had an issue in 3 years. i also didnt have to replace any parts computer or otherwise.....hope this helps."

this happened to my old bronco, i was told it was vapor lock, it can also happen if you manualy fill up the tank past the point where the pump stops itself. but i think the mechanic was wrong about the terminology vapor lock is something a little different from what i read on the interwebs lol

It's most any modern vehicle, not just Rams.

I am also surprised it had enough effect to run rought but not throw a CEL. I had a Jeep that would throw that code by just looking at it wrong. Tried a new gas cap, took it to have it smoke tested and supposedly repaired, and it would still throw that code every now and then.

All of the gas stations I go to have a sign that says "turn off vehicle before pumping". I sure hope the OP doesn't ignore the one that says "No Smoking" as well.

And I don't know if this is across the board or not, but when I bought a new Toyota last year, I was told to never "top off" when refueling under any circumstances. When the pump stops, take it out and hang it back up. They said that overfueling it could cause fuel to run into the evap canister and cause other problems. I am and was pretty much already in the habit of doing that anyway. These days, when it stops, I'm happy to not run another nickel's worth in it. Then again, I always turn the engine off before I refuel as well.

I know an issue the older Rams have is the check valve being an issue after fueling but mainly when taking turns the truck would die out.

I though Jersey req'd attendants to pump gas and consumer couldnt pump their own?

Yeah they do but the guy doesn't care if your car is running or your smoking and always tops it off to the nearest dollar. LoL
