my engine light has been on for years. some days it goes out (seems to go out conveniently for me right before emissions)

I've pulled out the code reader before and it says "Small vacuum leak"...

could this have anything to do with the cold air intake that I put on a few years back?

 

More than likely it is the gas cap. The right way to correct the problem is get the code, look up the full description and follow the steps to resolve. I have attached the web site I primarily use.
