Lived there from 1955-1970, Ellsworth, McPherson, Newton, and in the Flint Hills. 1972-74 in Hays. Used to go to visit friends at K-State in Manhattan. At some point I saw a tree for the first time while on a trip to the South, fell in love with it, and decided to move to the woods. 
Kansas wasn't really that bad. I just hated the winters. I remember lying on my back in the winter (-20 degrees) in Hays changing the plugs on my '68 Dodge Van so it would start. Ouch! Sure taught me something about preventive maintenance!
