Hopefully you checked your backlash before you pulled your third member. When you install a new one or re-install the old one using the existing gearset (ring and pinion) the backlash should be set to the same setting as you originally had. This insures as close to identical gear contact pattern as possible.

Default How much its going to cost to fix my axle tone ring

ok so i called a known shop here in my area, and i talked to the mech. and i told him that the axle tone ring needs to be replaced. he had asked if i had the parts which i told him i did. he said since the gears have to come out it would be a great idea to replace the seals and bearings. so im ok with that. he gave me a total labor cost of $325. i was wanting to know from you guys if this seems like a fair price.

Seems kind of low to me. How many hours did he say it would take him? I would think it would take at least 3 or 4 min to drain it... remove axles... take out carrier.... remove ring gear... clean everything thoroughly........replace tone ring.... replace all bearings - races - and seals...and then get it all back together and adjusted correctly. It's not a particularly easy job. And that time estimate is if everything goes right and no snags.. know what I mean. I just did this a couple of months ago.

Tone ring replacement. I could do that on my back in the driveway in about 3hrs and includes replacing the axle seals and axle bearings. He is NOT going to replace your carrier bearings or your pinion bearing FYI at that price, which is fine because then he'll have to check backlash and pinion depth..etc. There is no shimming involved for just the tone ring. carrier out/carrier in kinda thing.

Now, make sure he knows how to adjust the pre-load as it needs to be released to pull the carrier out(unless he's just going to force it out?..bad)
This requires a special spanner tool/wrench that goes inside the axle tubing to tighten or loosen. http://extremecustomparts.com/i-3611...ol-yt-a06.html

Whats wrong with your tone ring that it needs replacing? Are there teeth broken off or something? Have you changed the sensor ontop of the housing?

i replaced the sensor and it still had the same problem....so i went and took off the diff cover and notice that my tone ring is missing teeth...i have no idea how that could have happened...but the mech told me that you have to take out the gears to get to the tone ring..if i knew how to backlash i would attempt this myself

Do you have stock LSD? Maybe it spit out a retaining clip? I'd deal without ABS if it was my truck. That's all the tone ring is good for. Unless the integrity of the ring is compromised by a crack or some sort.
Here's one cheap btw

Yeah, did some research and looks like speedo only goes by tone ring. I thought it had 2 sensors to go by...nope.
