I have a '02 1500 5.9 4x4. I tried searching but couldn't find what I was looking for. I need to know if the stub shafts on the front diff will come out without removing the front cover. Not talking about the CV shafts, the splined stub on the drivers side front diff that sticks out about 2-3" My splines are gone.
Yep, although its easier if you remove the cover you can pop it out with some effort. There is a clip that you have to pop it out of. The trick is to be able to snap the new one in, but people do it...
You can pull it without pulling the cover. You need to give it a good tug with a puller, the clip is like a CV shaft clip and has rounded edges and the side gears in the diff are tapered to help it compress when the shaft is tugged on.
